According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adolescents and young adults constitute a considerable proportion of any population. Adolescence is a period in human growth development that occurs after childhood and before adulthood, from ages 10 to 19. Characterized by an accelerated growth, adolescents are pressured to indulge in high risk behaviours such as alcohol and substance use, cigarettes, early sexual debut, which results in unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (including HIV) and injuries. In resource limited settings, adolescents face the threats of impoverishment, economic insecurity, inequality and social exclusion which further deepens their vulnerability and often results in school drop-outs, child labour and trafficking, especially for the girl-child.
APIN through PEPFAR funding have affected the lives of over 300 adolescents empowering them with various skills ranging from bead making, make up and gele tying, liquid soap making, vulcanizing, head dressing, carpentry, mechanic, etc, and for those that wish to continue with formal education supported school enrollment and attendance through partnership with school education board, owners of skill centers, communities and philanthropist.
APIN is open to more sponsorship and partnerships to continue to support adolescents or enrolment into various skill acquisition programs.
Let’s do this together…….making all the difference in the lives of these great leaders of tomorrow.
