APIN procured 15 fluorescence microscopes (FM) for the 43 Oyo State DOTS center laboratories and organised TB fluorescence microscopy training for 25 laboratory scientists in Oyo State from 15th to 20th of April, 2012.
AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria (APIN) has since 2008, been supporting the integration of HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) into Tuberculosis (TB) DOTS centers in Oyo state, in collaboration with the Oyo State TB and Leprosy Control Program (STBLCP). APIN continues to provide infrastructural support; and as part of its effort to build laboratory capacity in enhancing the laboratory diagnosis of Tuberculosis (TB), training of lab personnel.
APIN procured 15 fluorescence microscopes (FM) for the 43 Oyo State DOTS center laboratories and organised TB fluorescence microscopy training for 25 laboratory scientists in Oyo State from 15th to 20th of April, 2012. The training was aimed at equipping laboratory personnel in Oyo state with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to effectively and efficiently perform Acid Fast Bacilli (AFB) fluorescence microscopy and thus build a pool of competent and well-trained personnel.
APIN, represented by Dr. Soji Adeyanju, the Site Coordinator of the APIN program at Adeoyo Maternity Hospital, Ibadan, presented five (5) of the 15 fluorescence microscopes to Oyo State and these were received by Dr. Wole Lawal (Oyo State TB focal person) on behalf of the Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin.
The recipient sites were:-
1. Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Iwo, Osun State
2. General Hospital, Fiditi, Oyo State
3. Our Lady of Apostles Catholic Hospital, Oluyoro, Ibadan, Oyo State
4. University of Ibadan Health Center, (Jaja) Ibadan, Oyo State
5. St. Mary’s Hospital, Eleta, Oyo State
The National Coordinator of NTBLCP, Dr. Joshua Obasanya, in his remarks offered words of encouragement to participants on the joint effort at reducing the TB disease burden in Nigeria.
