APIN RENOVATION OF HEALTH FACILITIES IN OYO STATE
My name is Abosede, I was tested HIV positive during my first pregnancy at Ring Road State Hospital in 16th of January 2006. I found it difficult to believe and did not want to accept the report. With proper counselling, I returned to Adeoyo Maternity Hospital Yemetu, Ibadan for ANC where I benefitted from PMTCT intervention.
I had my first child (a girl) in the same hospital but did not breastfeed. We were supplied baby formula and after 18months, my baby came out HIV negative. I had the second child two years after the first and the third child a year after I had the second one (both girls also) through PMTCT and also fed them with formula and after 18 months both of them also came out HIV negative.
To the glory of God, my spouse is HIV negative till date and also knew my status as HIV positive and we are living together happily. Another good news is that I was privileged to go for a training in Abuja 2008 and Enugu 2009. After that I was employed and gave the opportunity to work as a counsellor under the APIN program at Adeoyo Maternity Hospital Site and I am still working there till date.
My story has made others in the program live a positive life and also helped them disclose to their partners. I have also gained more experience by attending different trainings organized by APIN and State. I am really grateful to God and APIN for the opportunity given to me.
My name is Kehinde, I came for my ANC at Adeoyo Maternity Hospital in Ibadan and I was tested HIV positive. I broke down initially as I could not come to terms with my new status. I had my first child (a girl) having passed through PMTCT. I did not breastfeed my child as I was instructed then, which was a major issue in the environment for a mother not to breastfeed her new born but I thank God today, after 18months my baby came out HIV negative.
Two years after my first delivery, I was pregnant again and passed through PMTCT intervention in February 2013 till delivery. My child was not breastfed as usual following doctors’ advice, my baby was fed with baby formula. The rapid test done at 18 months showed the boy is HIV negative.
To the glory of God my husband is HIV negative, he is aware of my status and we are both living happily. My current CD4 is 928cells/ml. In addition, I was employed and opportune to work as a counsellor under the APIN program and I still work there till date.
My story has made newly HIV positive-enrolled patients in the program to live positively and also helped them to disclose to their partners.
I have also gained more experience by attending different trainings both organized by APIN and the State ministry of health.
Am really grateful to God and APIN for the opportunity given to me.
My name is Isola, I was born on 15th June, 1984. I tested positive during an outreach but I refused to go for treatment because I was scared of being stigmatized.
After one year, I came to Adeoyo Maternity Hospital for my ANC and I was re-tested and the result was also positive. I was thoroughly counselled and was really pleased with the counselling and I enrolled for PMTCT but when my pregnancy was 4 months, I defaulted and became very sick. My condition was terrible because I was told that I had TB and low blood count and as well pregnant. I could not be nursed in the antenatal ward like other pregnant mothers but was in the side ward where patients in critical condition like me are being managed. My relatives were nowhere to support me.
I was tracked by IYA EWE (one of the counsellors) and she informed me that my viral load has increased. I came and was told I had failed virologically, I almost lost my life and that of my unborn baby but the team in Adeoyo helped me and I gave birth to a pre-term baby and today she is HIV negative.
After I got the news that my daughter is negative, then I decided to bring the twins I had before her but one of them came out positive, I was devastated but I was encouraged that he will be fine. Today to God’s glory both I and my son are doing great. All thanks to God Almighty, APIN and the whole Team in Adeoyo for their support and encouragement.
