APIN Ondo’s Dr. Oluwafemi Ajayi Selected as CDC Global TB Elimination Champion

Dr Ajayi, along with five other individuals, initiatives and organizations around the world, was recognized for his meaningful contributions to end Tuberculosis in Nigeria. AKURE, ONDO STATE, NIGERIA — March 29, 2021 — Dr Oluwafemi Ajayi, the TB/HIV Focal Person at the Ondo State office of APIN Public Initiatives has emerged as a CDC Global TB Elimination Champion. To commemorate this year’s World TB Day, the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified and recognized organizations, individuals and initiatives around the world that have made significant efforts and employed ingenious strategies to end Tuberculosis in their countries, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr Ajayi works closely with the Ondo State Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (STBLCP) to identify locations and populations where the risk of TB is high. Then, in partnership with the state, he implements strategies to raise awareness about TB/HIV and increase the access and uptake of TB care and treatment. Speaking about the recognition, Dr Ajayi had this to say, “I want to thank CDC for this nomination as Global TB champion. It is truly an honour. However, I must say that even though I’m the one being recognized, the nomination actually belongs to APIN Public Health Initiatives because they gave me the opportunity to serve as TB/HIV lead in Ondo state. I’m grateful for the support of my colleagues at the APIN Ondo office, especially the Head of Office, Dr Abimbola Ariyo and the State lead, Dr Anuri Emeh. Finally, I must acknowledge the efforts of the entire team at the Ondo State Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (STBLCP), specifically Dr Oluwafemi Aina, Mr Alexander Akinwumi and Mrs Stella Owolabi, who have worked tirelessly to end Tuberculosis in the state.” APIN Public Health Initiatives congratulates Dr Ajayi and looks forward to seeing more accomplishments from him in the near future.
