We attended the 40th Annual Conference of the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN). It was great not only to win an award for our support and contributions to the vision of APHPN in promoting excellence in public health practise but also to host a plenary session where we shared our experience integrating Non-Communicable diseases into our HIV program, and also demonstrated the use of our AVIVA software for Cervical Cancer screening/diagnosis. It was great to receive feedback, share and learn from the amazing physicians and academicians at the conference.

We were pleased to have the Ondo State Deputy Governor, Chief Olayide Adelami visit our exhibition booth and we got to tell him more about our interventions in the state and in Nigeria.

To round up the week-long event, APIN staffs alongside other APHPN attendees visited the Nibanola Golf Course where we took a hike and had other fun activities.

So many wonderful memories were made on this trip and we can’t wait for next year!

At the inaugural edition of the 1st APIN Public Health Initiatives Annual Symposium, we brought together leading global and national experts in the public health landscape to discuss the theme, “Integrating Non-Communicable Diseases and HIV to Ensure Long and Quality lives for People Living with HIV (PLHIV)”.

We are privileged to have had Dr Salma Anas, the Special Adviser to the President on Health, the Honourable Minster of Health represented by the Director of Public Health, Dr Chukwuma Anyaike and our keynote speaker, Dr Prebo Barango of the NCD Division from the WHO HQ in Geneva.

There were thought-provoking sessions from Dr Mangai Toma Malau of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Olaposi Olatoregun of PHISS3 project and our own Dr Abiodun Isah.

We also had a panel discussion with leading experts in HIV/AIDS and Non-Communicable Diseases from NASCP, Resolve to Save Lives, and two of our high-performing facilities in Benue and Plateau States.

Hosting this symposium was a dream come true for us and we can’t wait for next year’s edition!

June 14 is World Blood Donor Day and APIN partnered with National Blood Service Commission for various activities commemorating the WBDD.

During the course of the WBDD week, APIN joined the NBSC, and other partners to kick off the day with a Sensitization/Awareness road walk and press briefing in Abuja.

We then rounded up this year’s World Blood Donor Day activities with a radio engagement on Armed Forces Radio 107.7 FM Abuja and also partnered with the National Blood Service Commission (NBSC) to host a Secondary School Blood Safety Symposium and Quiz competition!

With over 10 schools in attendance, we are delighted to see the younger generation excel in the knowledge of blood safety, blood donation and its importance in saving lives.

Army Day Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja won the debate competition while Government Girls Secondary School, Dutse – Abuja won the Quiz competition.

Our deepest gratitude goes to everyone who made this year’s WBDD a success. Remember, it is our civic responsibility to donate blood, donate often and save a life!

We applaud the efforts of NBSC in increasing public awareness and participation in blood donation and for ensuring that safe blood and blood products are available for saving lives. We also thank every voluntary blood donor for the lifesaving gifts of their blood. You are true heroes!

World Blood Donor Day may have passed but we won’t stop encouraging people to join the blood donation movement.

Our team in Oyo State partnered with the Oyo state chapter of the National Blood Service Commission (NBSC) to host a Blood Drive at their headquarters.

Our Oyo State Prevention lead, Mrs. Bola Thompson, the National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at group in Nigeria, and the Rotary Club State President gave inspiring speeches, encouraging volunteers to freely donate blood and help save lives.

Thanks to the amazing volunteers, 215 pints of safe blood were realized from the Oyo State blood drive. You are true heroes! We are proud to have been a part of this lifesaving initiative.

All the way in Ondo State, we partnered with our Adolescent and Young Persons (AYP) hub, the Kids and Teens Resource Centre to hold a HIV Testing and Movie party to celebrate Children’s Day last week.

The event featured a talent show and lots of games and fun activities. After the movie, the participants were led through interactive sessions and discussions about HIV, Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), negotiation, life-building and leadership skills.

APIN worked with the testing team in Akure North LGA to provide HIV testing services. Counsellors were also on ground to guide interested persons through the process of using HIV self-test kits. Our deepest appreciation goes out to everyone who helped make this a memorable event for the AYPs.

We continue to work with health facilities, health workers, women groups, community-based organizations and the state government to increase public awareness of cervical cancer, the need for early screening and the available treatment options.

Cervical Cancer is preventable and we want more women to get screened. Here are some more pictures from the presentation of thermal ablation machines to 11 facilities in Oyo State.

Two of our supported states, Oyo and Ondo, have moved from Surge status to HIV Treatment Saturation / Epidemic Control status.

This means that the states have succeeded in identifying the targeted number of existing People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and placing them all on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). The certificates of graduation were presented at the 2nd Biannual Program Performance and Stakeholder Engagement meeting hosted by our funders, the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Uscdc Nigeria).

Going forward, the states will focus on preventing new HIV infections, retaining the PLHIV who are already on ART and supporting them to achieve viral suppression while mopping up any remaining cases who aren’t already on treatment.

Kudos to our staff in Oyo and Ondo, and to the state governments for this amazing feat!
