Highlights from the 42nd APHPN Scientific Conference In Borno State. APIN Wins Award!

The 42nd Annual Scientific Conference of the Association for Public Health Physicians of Nigeria opened with focused discussions on this year’s theme, Healing in the Crossfire: Delivering Health Services in Conflict and Crisis.

Day One featured two oral presentations from the team at APIN Public Health Initiatives, addressing the realities of sustaining health programmes amid insecurity and fragile health systems. Conflict and crisis settings often place immense strain on funding streams and human resources for health, increasing the risk of treatment interruptions and poorer outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Victor Ekeke examined HIV service integration as a strategic pathway for sustaining funding and strengthening domestic resilience. Favour Pepple presented lessons from conflict-affected regions, highlighting the integration of paediatric HIV services into existing Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) platforms to reduce pressure on overstretched health workers while ensuring continuity of care for children.

Day Two, held in Maiduguri, continued the momentum with in-depth conversations on maintaining essential health services while safeguarding both patients and providers in high-risk environments.

Dr. Kelechi Ngwoke, Associate Director of Community Services at APIN, presented the organization’s work supporting survivors of sexual violence across fragile settings. Particular interest was drawn to the No Means No Programme, an initiative that equips girls and boys with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to recognize risky situations, prevent abuse, and seek help when necessary.

The conference also featured a high-level panel discussion on innovative programming strategies for crisis-prone settings. Moderated by Dr. Kingsley Okafor and chaired by Dr. Nyemike Awunor, the session included contributions from Dr. Oluseye Ajayi, Dr. Temi Omole, Evans Ejimkaraonye, and Dr. Kelechi Ngwoke. Panelists shared practical insights on delivering essential health services and reaching vulnerable populations in conflict-affected communities.

Across both days, a consistent message emerged: strong partnerships, community-driven solutions, and sustained commitment are central to protecting lives and preserving health systems in times of crisis.
