Still On World AIDS Day. APIN Takes Awareness To the Streets In Abuja, Benue and Oyo States!

World AIDS Day may have been on the 1st of December, but we are certainly not toning down our efforts to increase awareness about HIV/AIDS and available HIV services including counselling and testing, treatment and preventive strategies. Staff in three of our project states including Abuja (HQ), Benue and Oyo States, came out en-masse to engage with members of various communities and provide life-saving information about HIV/AIDS.

To end AIDS, the first step is ensuring that you get tested! HIV testing services, along with lifesaving Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) if found HIV-positive, are completely free in Nigeria and can be easily accessed at health facilities all over the country. So, get tested TODAY! Together, we can build a world free of HIV/AIDS.

This year’s theme “Take the RIGHTS path to End AIDS” highlights the link between access to quality HIV services for People Living with HIV and human rights.

We can only end AIDS when we begin to see and handle barriers in access to HIV and other health services as infringements on the rights of People Living with HIV.

Here are a few things we can do:

1. Eliminate inequalities in access to HIV services for all groups especially women, girls and key population groups.

2. Ensure that everyone has access to accurate, timely health education that is tailored to their unique needs so that they can make informed health decisions.

3. Let Communities lead! Communities must be involved in planning for HIV-focused interventions targeted at their members.

4. Talk more about U=U! PLHIV need to know that it is possible to live life to the fullest and that they can achieve an undetectable viral load if they are consistent with their Antiretroviral Treatment (ARTs).
