January is Cervical Cancer awareness month! You probably know that cervical cancer affects only women but did you know that Cervical Cancer can be prevented by taking the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine?

Led by our Prevention & Community Services and Clinical Services teams, we held a sensitization / awareness event for women at Dutse Traditional Market, Abuja to educate them about Cervical Cancer and the importance of early screening.

The women asked questions and our team was on hand to answer them.

Have you been screened for Cervical Cancer? If you haven’t, please do so as soon as possible! Remember, early detection is key.

In its first edition of the National Blood Donor Day, APIN Public Health Initiatives partnered with with the National Blood Service Commission (NBSC) to increase the public’s awareness of the importance of blood donation.

We held a webinar with experts from NBSC to discuss blood nation as a civic responsibility.

Also, we hit the streets to create further awareness before the press briefing by the Honorable Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire and the Honorable Minister of State for Health, Hon. Ekumankama Joseph.

They applauded the day and the efforts of the NBSC and all partners to increase citizens’ participation in blood donation and to make safe blood available in order to save lives.

The 16 Days of Activism against gender based violence lasts from 25th November to 10th December every year and we are seizing every opportunity to educate people about Gender-Based Violence and how they can be a part of the solution.

Our HQ team engaged with some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Apo district to sensitize the young men and women about the various manifestations of GBV in our society, the negative impact of GBV and the need to speak out and stand against all forms of GBV. It was enlightening to hear their contributions during the interactive session with our key speaker, Mrs. Ndidi Onwuekweikpe.

To ensure that the stand against GBV doesn’t just end in 16 days, we inaugurated some of the corps members as GBV advocates who will speak out and take necessary actions anywhere GBV is being perpetuated. We thank the coordinators of the Apo NYSC Secretariat and the corps members for their time and participation

World AIDS Day : Wassa IDP camp, Abuja, is home to over 5,000 internally displaced persons. As part of our activities to commemorate the 2022 World AIDS Day and in line with the theme: #Equalize to #EndAIDS, our HQ team visited the IDP camp to sensitize the residents on issues around HIV/AIDS.

It was a truly enlightening experience as the IDP community shared their concerns, questions and experiences around HIV/AIDS and other health issues including malaria and received answers and counseling from our team.

At the end of the event, Dr Plang Jwanle, our Director of Clinical Services, presented donated items such as foodstuffs, clothes and beverages to the Chairman of the IDP Camp on behalf of the management and staff of APIN. To ensure that there are no new infections of HIV, we must ensure that everyone everywhere has unfettered access to HIV information as well as prevention & treatment services. Let’s equalize!

Did you know that 1 in 3 women experience Gender-based Violence (GBV) during their lifetime?

Today marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. GBV exists in several forms and it happens all around us.

This year’s theme, “UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls”, calls for collective action to eliminate gender-based violence and to support victims to become survivors!

APIN works with the Federal and State Ministries of Women Affairs and Social Development and other stakeholders including religious & traditional leaders, law enforcement agencies, health services providers and other non-governmental organizations to provide post-GBV clinical and psychosocial support to survivors and report cases as needed.

We came. We competed. We conquered!

We wrapped up the Annual Inter-NGO FIDAF games with APIN bringing home three medals: A gold medal in scrabble and two bronze medals in badminton and basketball!

A hearty congratulations to the winners and participants from APIN and other organizations and our deepest commendations go to the organizers of this year’s FIDAF tournament for putting together such an engaging and exciting event. We can’t wait for the next one!

APIN’s Inaugural event for the International Men’s Day commemoration was a very memorable one. Some highlights of the event were health checks for the men and the panel discussion / interactive session where staff discussed the challenges and pressures that men face and how to deal with them. We also discussed abuse, peer pressure and the society’s standards of what a modern day man should be like.

It wasn’t all talk, though. The event also featured fun activities and games like our men showed their flexibility by tying ‘gele’ for the women. The event ended on a high note with a lots of smiles as seen in the group pictures.

APIN wishes all men a happy #InternationalMensDay as we look forward to next year’s event.

Our CEO, Dr Prosper Okonkwo and Deputy CEO-Programs, Dr Jay Osi Samuels were at the opening ceremony of the International Conference on Health Advances, Innovation & Research (ICHAIR), organized by the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).

As part of our commitment to building the capacity of upcoming & existing practitioners in medical and public health research, APIN is proud to be partnering with NIMR as a co-sponsor of the conference.

We are also pleased to announce that we sponsored 30 students across Nigeria to attend and participate in ICHAIR 2022.

APIN recently hosted the first batch of the ongoing Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) basics training for state Clinical Mentors.

The #training conducted in partnership with the U.S Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) , the U.S President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and Public Health Information, Surveillance Solutions and Systems (PHIS3) will equip mentors with the knowledge and skills to integrate improvement science into the technical assistance that they provide to treatment sites.

This is important to ensure that data in consistently being used to strengthen the delivery of #HIV services and drive progress towards the attainment of national and global HIV targets.

Today at the CDC Biannual Program Performance Review meeting / 2022 End of Project Cycle, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Nigeria presented awards to all implementing partners including APIN for Public Health Excellence. APIN was the only IP to receive two awards!!

In addition to the award for Public Health Excellence which all the other IP’s received, APIN received a Special Services Award for our support to NASCP during the launch of the National Clinical Mentors Programme (NCMP).

The two-day meeting brings together stakeholders and implementing partners from all 19 PEPFAR-supported states to discuss and review the progress that the HIV program in Nigeria has recorded, particularly with support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) / the U.S President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

We deeply appreciate the U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard, the National Coordinator of the National AIDS, STIs and Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NASCP), Dr Akudo Ikpeazu and the CDC Nigeria Country Director, Dr Mary Boyd who presented the award to our CEO, Dr Prosper Okonkwo.
